To whom is this Residencia Temporal permit directed?

Familia reunida

This permit may be applied for by foreigners who certify having a family bond with a Chilean citizen or foreigner holder of a Residencia Definitiva permit under the following conditions:

  • Spouse or other comparable role that, in accordance with the applicable law, produces effects equivalent to marriage.
  • Parent.
  • Minor child.
  • Child with disability.
  • Unmarried child under 24 years of age who is studying.
  • Minor under your personal care or guardianship.

Where can I apply for family reunification?

This application must be made through the Portal de Trámites Digitales of the Servicio Nacional de Migraciones, logging in with ClaveÚnica or with the account created for this purpose. You may use one of these two options, depending on where you are:

  • Solicitud de Residencias Temporales para extranjeros fuera de Chile“, if you are abroad.
  • Solicitud de Residencias Temporales para extranjeros dentro de Chile“, if you are within the country.

As an applicant, you must submit the documentation that is specific to your personal case, as listed below:

For a person related to a permanent resident

  1. Passport or identification document.
  2. Certificate of criminal record or equivalent document issued by the competent authority of their country of origin or that in which they have resided in the last 5 years (required to applicant over 18 years old).
  3. Birth certificate of the holder of the Residencia Definitiva.
  • Child under 18 years of age under the care of the holder:
    1. Passport or identification document.
    2. Birth certificate of the applicant.
    3. Certificado de cuidado (document that certifies guardianship) issued by the parent.
  • Single child over 18 and under 24 years old who is studying:
    1. Passport or identification document.
    2. Criminal record certificate or equivalent document issued by the competent authority of their country of origin or the country in which they have resided in the last 5 years (required to applicant over 18 years old).
    3. Birth certificate of the applicant.
    4. Certificado de matrícula (Certificate of enrollment) or Certificado de alumno regular (Regular student certificate) issued by a Chilean educational establishment, recognized by the State.
  • Child with disability:
    1. Passport or identification document.
    2. Certificate of criminal record or equivalent document issued by the competent authority of their country of origin or the country in which they have resided in the last 5 years (required to applicant over 18 years old).
    3. Birth certificate of the applicant.
    4. Certificate issued by the competent institution attesting to the disability status.
  • Minor under the care of the holder:
    1. Passport or identification document.
    2. Applicant's birth certificate.
    3. Certificado de cuidado (document that certifies guardianship) signed before a public notary if issued in Chile or duly apostilled or legalized if issued abroad.
    4. Certificate stating the guardianship or custody in favor of the holder of the Residencia Definitiva.
  1. Passport or identification document.
  2. Certificate of criminal record or equivalent document issued by the competent authority of their country of origin or that in which they have resided in the last 5 years (required to applicant over 18 years old).
  3. Marriage Certificate between the applicant and the holder of the Residencia Definitiva.
  1. Passport or identification document.
  2. Certificate of criminal record or equivalent document issued by the competent authority of their country of origin or that in which they have resided in the last 5 years (required to applicant over 18 years old).
  3. Certificate of civil union between the applicant and the holder of the Residencia Definitiva.

For a person with a family bond to a Chilean citizen

  1. Passport or identification document.
  2. Certificate of criminal record or equivalent document issued by the competent authority of their country of origin or that in which they have resided in the last 5 years (required to applicant over 18 years old).
  3. Birth certificate of the Chilean child issued by the Servicio de Registro Civil e Identificación (Civil Registry and Identification Service).
  • Child under 18 years of age:
    1. Passport or identification document.
    2. Birth certificate of the applicant.
    3. Certificado de cuidado (document that certifies guardianship) signed before a public notary if issued in Chile or duly apostilled or legalized if issued abroad.
  • Single child over 18 and under 24 years old who is studying:
    1. Passport or identification document.
    2. Birth certificate of the applicant.

General information

If you have a Residencia Temporal permit for family reunification, you may engage in lawful remunerated activities, except for the limitations established by the Código del Trabajo (Labor Code) regarding the employment of minors.

Yes, you may apply for a Prórroga de Residencia Temporal permit. In order to do so, you will have to certify that you are still related to the person of Chilean nationality or the holder of the Residencia Definitiva.

Important!

  • The passport must be valid for at least one year as from the application date (for applications submitted abroad).
  • For foreigners who are within Chile as Permanencia Transitoria holders, they must submit a copy of the Tarjeta Única Migratoria (TUM) or a copy of the entry stamp in their passport.
  • Documents issued in any language other than Spanish and English must be submitted together with their respective translation, which must be authorized by a certified body.
  • All documents issued abroad or by the respective consular representation in Chile must be apostilled or duly legalized, as stipulated in Articles 345 and 345 bis of the Código de Procedimiento Civil (Code of Civil Procedure).
  • Documents issued by private parties must be submitted within 30 days from the date of issuance. Those issued by public institutions and agencies must be presented within 60 days from the date of issuance unless the validity of the document is expressly stated.
